Zim – a desktop wiki, also stylised as zim-wiki, is a free wiki engine compiled in the Python programming language, created by Jaap Karssenberg, and is available in 27 user-interface languages, and will run on Linux, M$ Windows, or Mac OSX. It looks visually similar to a personal information management (PIM) software package, such as M$ Outlook.

It is a graphical text editor, and its pages are stored in a folder structure, and can contain attachments. Zim stores all of its data in plain text files with wiki formatting (it does not, and can not use any of the established database services for data storage, though it does support indexing with SQLite). Various plugins are available, and provide additional functionality, such as a task list manager, an equation editor, a tray icon, and support for version control. Zim supports most of the common wiki syntax methods for link creation; including CamelCase, free links, backlinks, and interwiki, but does not support page redirects, structured data, nor sister wiki and HTML tags (although you can export to HTML and LaTeX).

Still actively developed as of 2022, Zim is released for free as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL v2).
